Our wildflower meadow in Eggendorf is taking shape
In collaboration with the regional nature conservation association Landschaftspflegeverein Thermenlinie–Wienerwald–Wiener Becken, we have launched the project “Biodiversity at TAG”. The initiative, initially focused on Lower Austria and later expanding to Styria and Carinthia, aims to support native habitats and promote biodiversity at our sites.
Stepping Stone Biotopes for greater diversity
At the heart of the project is the creation of so-called stepping stone biotopes – small, natural areas that serve as habitats, refuges, and corridors for plants, insects, and small animals. The first pilot site is a wildflower meadow in Eggendorf, sown in autumn 2024. It will be professionally monitored for three years, after which it is intended to remain as a permanent, species-rich meadow – a small yet meaningful contribution to enhancing the ecological value of our infrastructure.
Early successes already visible
Despite challenges such as a dry winter and stony soil, early signs of success are already apparent: drought-tolerant plants like the early-blooming Hoary Alyssum (Berteroa incana) have taken root, providing vital nourishment for wild bees and other insects.
We also observed a healthy presence of Corncockle (Agrostemma githago), a rare arable wildflower. Beyond its vibrant bloom, it plays multiple ecological roles: protecting young plants from sun and wind, suppressing aggressive species, and supporting healthy meadow development.
An interesting fact: many seeds in the regional seed mix have delayed germination – they only sprout under optimal conditions, such as summer or autumn rains. As a result, the meadow’s appearance will continue to evolve year after year. In comparable projects, it has taken up to ten years for all species in the mix to bloom.
A blue butterfly as our #TAGFalter?
A special highlight during our visit: a beautifully colored blue butterfly that perfectly matched our corporate design – perhaps our #TAGFalter?
We would like to sincerely thank the nature conservation association for their expert guidance, and our dedicated colleagues from HSSEQ and Operation & Maintenance, whose commitment makes this project possible.
Because sustainability starts at our own doorstep – and every bloom counts.
