Southern Hydrogen Corridor: 5 nations signed joint declaration

On January 21, 2025, Italy, Germany, Austria, Algeria, and Tunisia signed a joint declaration of intent in Rome, Italy, reaffirming their commitment to the SoutH2 Corridor. The ambitious 3,300-kilometer infrastructure initiative will transport renewable hydrogen from North Africa to Italy, Austria, and Germany, bridging continents to accelerate the energy transition.

The signing took place during a Pentalateral Ministerial Meeting at Villa Madama, chaired by Italian Ministers Antonio Tajani and Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. High-level representatives from the five nations, Switzerland, and the European Commission participated, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in realizing this transformative project.

The Ministerial Meeting was followed by a Business Forum and our Managing Director, Daniele Gamba, presented the progress of the Austrian TSOs with their PCI projects on the SoutH2Corridor initiative, namely  “H2 Readiness on the TAG pipeline system” of TAG GmbH and “WAG + PW Backbone” of Gas Connect Austria GmbH, alongside Stefano Venier, Snam (Italy), Kathrin Hartung, bayernets (Germany), and M. Farhat Ounoughi, Sonatrach (Algeria).

The Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica and the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale hosted this milestone event. With over 130 participants from institutions and industry, the forum showcased opportunities in the hydrogen supply chain and strengthened Europe-Africa partnerships.
